JL Russell & Associates Building and remodeling traditionally planned homes for the past 30 years has organically led Jeff onto a more concentrated path- the planning and execution of living spaces adhering to what is known as Biophilic Design. Having an innate understanding and sense of the importance of “space” relative to its occupants, Jeff is finding this focused direction to be natural, enlightening, and deeply fulfilling.
A term popularized in the 1980’s by biologist Edward O Wilson, biophilia translates to “a love of nature.” The design principle behind biophilia is based on the understanding that humans are inherently meant to interact with nature, and that not doing so with enough frequency leads to a loss of productivity, a diminishing of creativity, a
A term popularized in the 1980’s by biologist Edward O Wilson, biophilia translates to “a love of nature.” The design principle behind biophilia is based on the understanding that humans are inherently meant to interact with nature, and that not doing so with enough frequency leads to a loss of productivity, a diminishing of creativity, and a depression of mood. At its core, Biophilic Design’s most basic tenet is to incorporate nature into an interior space through a variety of design and structural techniques. Some principal components of Biophilic Design used to achieve its full potential include the use of natural colors throughout the space, water features as an element of design, natural lighting, and an emphasized outdoor space, to name but a few. It is more than simply adding one or two of these components to an existing space- all elements must be well thought-out and cohesive.
Jeff has innovatively shifted his focus to creating spaces that encourage a sense of well-being, literally from withIN. From the overall design to the smallest of details, Jeff expects a living space to be unilaterally comfortable and accessible for all. Jeff has innovatively shifted his focus to creating spaces that encourage a sense of well-being, literally from withIN. From the overall design to the smallest of details, Jeff expects a living space to be unilaterally comfortable and accessible for all. Barrier-free, open concept - and at its base - structurally designed to best utilize the benefits of bringing the outdoors in. Attempting to reach what is known as “net-zero,” Jeff plans to minimize the carbon footprint in the design and building of each structure. Additionally, he aims to reduce the negative effect of electromagnetic fields (EMF) on those inhabiting the space by using strategically placed EMF blockers throughout. To further facilitate these philosophies and design principles, Jeff is incorporating the latest in a state-of-the-art building process: the use of a 3D concrete printer to form the main structure of the home. As this new technology advances, so with it will the lowering of the carbon footprint often left and overlooked by the construction industry.
As a lifelong resident of the sprawling and urban landscape that is Detroit, Jeff has seen firsthand the detrimental effects of this modern day disconnect from nature. Personally, environmentally, and as a whole, he has been witness to his city suffer as a result. Evolving into this more thoughtful approach to design, based on his decade
As a lifelong resident of the sprawling and urban landscape that is Detroit, Jeff has seen firsthand the detrimental effects of this modern day disconnect from nature. Personally, environmentally, and as a whole, he has been witness to his city suffer as a result. Evolving into this more thoughtful approach to design, based on his decades of experience, and bearing in mind the psychological and environmental benefits of Biophilic Design, Jeff is excited to be on the forefront of this growing movement and is looking forward to introducing the concept to his city and to his industry.
